AhlulBayt News Agency (ABNA): In an interview with the "Talking Politics" podcast on ITV, the British Prime Minister said with an unprecedented tone that he is "fed up" with households and businesses in the UK having to endure fluctuations and increases in energy bills once again due to external developments and decisions made by foreign leaders.
In these remarks, he mentioned Trump's name alongside Vladimir Putin, but the main focus of his comments was that the British people should not have to pay the price for shocks caused by international crises.
Starmer further described the war and instability in the region as a new pressure on the energy market, stating that dependence on international markets has caused the daily lives of people and the operating costs of businesses in the UK to fluctuate with every geopolitical tension.
Using this context, he once again defended his government's policy of accelerating the energy transition and developing renewable sources, claiming that the only way to achieve "energy independence" is to reduce this dependence.
These remarks came hours before Starmer's phone call with Trump from Doha, during which, according to the UK Prime Minister's Office, the two sides discussed the ceasefire with Iran and the development of a plan of action to resume shipping and restore freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to an official statement from the British government, the parties also agreed that following the establishment of the ceasefire, the next phase is to find a solution to stabilize the situation and get shipping moving again. The British Prime Minister, who has traveled to several Arab countries in the region in recent days, is trying to highlight London's role in post-ceasefire negotiations.
However, his recent remarks about Trump indicate that even at the height of diplomatic coordination with Washington, dissatisfaction with the economic consequences of the US President's approaches is growing in London.
